The VEX V5 Robotics Basics course starts with making a v5 clawbot, learning the application of motor drivetrain, and conducting an automated point-to-point distance race.
The difference between the VEX EDR Robotics Competition and the VEX IQ Robotics Competition
I often receive inquiries about the differences between VEX EDR and VEX IQ competitions. VEX IQ uses recycled plastic to assemble robots, while VEX EDR can cut metal materials to assemble robots. VEX V5 is the name of the hardware and system that have been updated in recent years. Compared with the previous Cortex series, V5 has a larger battery capacity and a faster mainframe computing speed, so the current competition mainly uses the v5 series hardware.
VEX EDR Hardware
VEX EDR has junior high school group, high school group, and university group, which is closer to the gameplay of engineers. The hardware of VEX EDR includes aluminum bars and metal bars, and screw caps are used to connect the body parts. The maximum number of V5 smart motors accepted in the competition is 8, and the maximum torque is 2.1 Nm. In addition to motors, pneumatic cylinders can also be used as robot parts. In addition, VEX EDR has more sensors than VEX IQ. In addition to the general distance sensor, there are also inertial sensors, gps sensors, optical sensors, and rotation sensors. VEX EDR also has a dedicated field GPS positioning sticker to facilitate programmers to perform more accurate positioning. At the same time, robots can also participate in AI artificial intelligence related competitions. The theme of the competition is to track the distance of objects, distinguish the size and color of objects, etc.
Who is VEX EDR suitable for?
Many secondary schools in Hong Kong have started to let students participate in the competition from junior high school, and gradually accumulated experience until they reached the senior high school level. VEX EDR is suitable for students with higher hands-on skills or students who have participated in the VEX IQ competition. Since the VEX EDR competition uses an engineer's mindset to design robots, it allows cutting metal materials to assemble robots. At the same time, motors also have different speed ratios, so the power issue needs to be considered during production, and the process takes more time than VEX IQ.
Student Development
VEX EDR has a university group. Students who have participated in VEX EDR competitions can also help with further studies. In the United States, some students served as programmers in the competition team and eventually got a job at Google.
